AITA for telling my dad (58) that it’s a bad idea to have another baby
Hey everyone,
My dad recently turned 58 and announced to me that my step mom (35 years old) is pregnant and to be due September. I currently live with them and my step sister. The news was a shock to say the least as a couple of months ago we found out that my dad has major blockages in his heart that would potentially need coronary bypass surgery. He also has high cholesterol, high BP and is pre-diabetic. He works night shifts and can’t really be there with us during the day since he sleeps.
My step mom and sister has only been in the country for a year now and she can’t speak English or have a job, I’m currently a full-time student and won’t finish school until August. My dad is currently the only provider financial wise and his job doesn’t make him enough money to support a family of 4, luckily my step mom has an inheritance from her late ex husband so she can help out whenever he’s short. My dad falls short on money frequently and I had financially supported my family when they were unable to with my school loan and part time job in the past.
In the past I had a talk with him about having more kids and that it wouldn’t be a good idea to have more since financially we barely get by as is, alongside his age and health issues. He has the mindset that if kids happen then they happen, there’s not really any family planning. Regardless, I had told him that I am in no state to help care for the child nor financially help them being a broke uni student with my own finances, and it had led to a fight where I was told that I should be happy about the news. My step mom has poor health of her own and I do not think it’ll be good on the child or her as my dad won’t be able to fully be there and take care of the child.
I had told him that I’d like to move out once I graduate in October as I’m not really comfortable with the idea of a crying child/possibly needing to help out, which led to him calling me selfish and not caring about him.
AITA?
TLDR; Older dad (58) having a baby with his wife (35) with financially instability, health issues and nightshift work
