How do I win the archery contest when half of my mouse clicks don't actually result in an arrow being fired

Title

How exactly are people passing this? I play most of the game on controller but had to switch to the mouse just to even keep up with the literal aimbot AI opponent but now half the time I click mouse to fire and either nothing happens or an arrow fires like 3 seconds later.

What am I missing here?
