Pay deductions snowballing for nurses
I just got my second pay check since transfering from PT to FT. For the past 2 years I have been working 2 PT jobs. A couple years in a private practice full time before that.
My heart broke and then sank to the bottom of my butthole when I saw my take home pay. The deductions for FT nurses have gotten so crazy that I am taking home LESS pay than I did as a new grad nurse in 2021. For context, my union pay has gone up almost $10/hr since then. How is this possible? I am spiraling and really reconsidering whether I can survive in the city I live in and grew up in if my pay checks keep turning up like this. I do still pick up casual shifts at my old workplace to supplement things.
I know everyone survives by doing overtime but nurses should not HAVE to do overtime to make their wage livable.
I also know that itll be worth it to have paid sick days for the first time is years...to have proper paid vacation next year will be amazing, havjng health insurance will add a few hundred dollars in my packed a month too. I KNOOOOW our pension is amazing and Ill be glad for it if I live till retirement age. I also know that there are people who have it waaaay worse than us. The majority of clients I look after have no fixed address or are living off shrimpy disability payments. I know how fortunate I am. But I just needed to vent about this for a minute.
Also, I do not live in the States. I live in a metropolitan city in a different country. The region this city is in has notorious nurse shortages and our union and regulatory college have some of the highest fees in the country.
