First time in the US-what to do in Des Moines this summer?

Hi everyone, I am from China, and will be a camp counselor this summer in Des Moines, it's my first time in the US I am really excited and curious what life will be like. I'd love to make some friends there! Also, are there any fun activities or events I can join in the weekends?
