Poem (Penny)
I am not a writer of any means, or even a deep person for that matter. Though I am up very late, and had this idea of a story in my head. So, I put it on paper, and recorded a voice over of it. I don’t fully know what I am seeking here… just something?
(Transcript / actual poem)
Penny.
You buy a soda—get back 51¢.
You open the door—coins hit the ground.
You grab the quarters. Good Enough.
Penny.
You get home. Crack it open. Take a sip.
Cold. Easy.
Keys in the bowl. Coins in the jar.
Penny.
Next day, Same spot.
You notice—the penny's gone.
Weird. Who even wants a penny?
Penny.
Spend over $100 without thinking.
Someone asks you for change.
“Sorry, no cash.”
Walk away… You paid Cash.
Penny.
The penny?
It's in the pocket of a single mom.
2 kids
Diapers. Milk.
Stolen—because she had to.
Running home—so they’re not alone.
Penny.
No money for help
No milk. No diapers.
But now she has enough.
Penny.
She gets home—hugs her kids
Feeds them
Puts them to sleep
She doesn’t eat.
Penny.
Next day—she’s walking
“Do you have any spare change?”
“It’s not much—but here.”
Two dollars
and a penny…
