I'm unable to shift while dreaming

Every now and then when I'm dreaming and become somewhat concious that I am, I'll try to open up a portal to shift through and attempt to pass through it, but it dosn't change anything and the dream just keeps going. Or I'll have really vivid dreams where I'm shifting and repeating affirmations, but the outcome is always the same. What's happening??
