AIO for not being able to leave this conversation in the past
My wife (24f) and I (24m) had a conversation about DNA tests. She stated that she feels like people are entitled to have a DNA tests, however, if she were ever asked, she would divorce me.
Her key points:
-It’s embarrassing to have one conducted
-It implies that she has/could have cheated
-She wouldn’t be able to see me or any other significant other the same afterwards
-No woman would want to know that you want a DNA test(she even said you could do one and not tell her and carry it to the grave, then it’d be fine)
Although I don’t intend to have a DNA test done (we just had our first kid), it bothers me to know that if I wanted one, I’d have to sacrifice my relationship either way. Should a DNA test only matter for the kid? Or should it be for the relationship that raises the kid in question?
I told her that I don’t agree with her reasoning as far as the divorce, however I understand that she feels as though she isn’t trusted. Maybe I feel like I have a different definition of trust, but just because I trust something doesn’t mean it’s true. To my understanding, women will never have to question their child. They literally get to see the baby come out, traditionally speaking of course. The only solid proof a guy could have is a DNA test. People from everywhere have similar physical characteristics, and that’s a brittle argument to say whether or not a child is yours. Why should I have to lose my relationship if I proposed a DNA test? Honesty is key, and I could never do something like that behind someone’s back. I think all things in a relationship require some communication and consideration for the S/O.
I also mentioned that she’s searched my phone on occasion, and that was a show of distrust. I asked her if I should be offended by that, to which she replied, “that’s different. One is a baby, while the other is a phone.” And I mentioned that the topic of discussion was trust. Trusting that a child is yours and knowing are two completely different things. I said that I think DNA tests should be mandatory for all fathers because a lot of men raise kids that aren’t theirs. She said “that’s fine, but then do you feel like the actual fathers should have to pay child support if they choose not to be in the child’s life?” I absolutely the f*** do.
Note: I’m not a toxic guy, I love conversations like these because I can’t talk about things like this often. I trust my wife, and I fully believe that my kid is mine and have no need for a DNA test. She’s a great wife and an even better mother, I just have trouble understanding her reasoning at times, hence, this topic. And I hope I don’t sound narcissistic or misogynistic, I promise I’m a really good guy.
Let me know what you guys think, because she’s not gonna give me the closure I need on this topic LOL.
