What was the most serious conversation you’ve had in your long-distance relationship, and did it help? (m32 f28)

Question

I had a really serious talk with my boyfriend yesterday. We’ve been together for about 15 months, and we’ve noticed a pattern: after we spend time together and then go back to our own countries, things get harder.

He tends to become quieter and more withdrawn for a few days, while I become more anxious and needy. This usually leads to a confusing and painful period for both of us — I feel the need to talk about how I’m feeling, and he needs about a week to process things and feel like himself again.

This time, during one of those moments, he told me he had been thinking about coming to visit me again, but he’s currently in a difficult situation at work. He also mentioned that his friends have noticed he’s been more stressed and sad lately, and suggested he should “put the relationship on a scale” and think about whether it’s healthy for him right now.

I understand where he’s coming from. I’m a very anxious person, while he’s much calmer and more secure, so we react very differently to the distance. I’ll admit that in moments of overwhelm, I’ve brought up the idea of breaking up twice during our relationship, which I know doesn’t help.

At the end of the call, though, he said something that stayed with me — that he really values the fact that we’re able to talk through things and solve problems even from a distance, and that the conversation actually made him feel calmer and better.

We both care about each other a lot and want this to work, but these cycles after visits are really hard.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Did you find a way to manage this phase better?
