Job market Social Science
Hi! I graduated 5 months ago from an Australian university, I have some publications (4 journal articles and several book chapters), including a Q1. I mostly research youth and digital cultures (from a sociological perspective).
While I was completing my PhD, I have been monitoring the job market. There were "a lot" of jobs, especially in the EU (e.g., University of Vienna).
Now, websites, such as THE, are constantly advertising positions (Lecturers, Assistant Prof., and in certain cases postdocs) in Asia and all the other stuff seemed to have disappeared from the radar. For example, the few times I see something from English-speaking unis, these are often either health-related positions in Social Science or teaching-focused jobs in Asian campuses (e.g., Stirling).
My questions are:
-
Has anyone any experience with working in places like Uzbekistan, China (mainland), HK, Singapore?
-
Where the hell are all the jobs gone?
-
Have you found a way to break through the German or Nordic European academic system?
-
I have been told that some private universities in the EU hire foreigners (e.g., UNIR), but none can explain to me how to get a position. Is it all about connections?
I am sorry for the variety of questions. My guess is that all of them are connected to a set of causes/dynamics, but I am not sure about it.
