Trying to decide: CMU QBB or NEU Bioinformatics (industry goal)
Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some advice on choosing between two programs:
- CMU – MS in Quantitative Biology & Bioinformatics (QBB)
- Northeastern University – MS in Bioinformatics
I’m currently trying to evaluate both options carefully and would love to hear different perspectives.
A bit about me:
- Background in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics
- Graduated in 2019, so I’m especially focused on re-entering and transitioning into the industry
- International student (India)
- Interested in genetics and bioinformatics-related roles
- Planning to go directly into industry after graduation with a good growth in job potential and salary (not aiming for a PhD)
From what I understand, both programs have their own strengths: CMU for its academic rigor and reputation, and NEU for its co-op and industry exposure but I’m trying to get a clearer picture beyond that.
- CMU is a 3 semester program which starts in August 26 and ends in Dec 27 and is located in Pittsburg (more AI/ML Tech Hub)
- NEU is a 2 year program with co-op (6 months) and is located in Boston (Biotech Hub)
Some things I’d really appreciate insight on:
- Overall career outcomes and employability from each program (especially for international students)
- Differences in curriculum structure and practical exposure
- How much the co-op at NEU compares to CMU’s network/reputation
- Whether the difference in cost is justified in either case
I’ve gone through the FAQ, but I’m looking for more specific comparisons between these two programs.
Any insights, personal experiences, or advice would be really helpful. Thank you!
