Considering a career change into rad tech
Hi, sorry if this type of question gets asked a lot on this sub. I am considering shifting careers from a software engineer into a radiologic technologist. I’m 25, graduated with a B.S. in 2024, and have 2 years of software engineering experience since I graduated (plus 1.5 years of internships during school).
I am still employed but I am continuously put on contracts that have expiration dates, so my job renewal is not guaranteed.
Why I’m thinking of leaving software engineering:
Honestly the job market is so brutal for this field atm and it feels very job-insecure especially with companies thinking AI will solve everything. Sedentary lifestyle is admittedly a privilege but I really think it is negatively impacting my health. It seems like it is very hard to obtain a WLB, I hate constantly thinking about work outside of working hours, having to depend on other people to advance, being scrutinized when the work items are delayed (even for reasons outside of my control). And honestly the job doesn’t feel satisfying, it feels fake like I’m not actually doing anything substantial that contributes to society (there is a roundabout argument that I do but I’m not gonna get into it lol)
Why I’m considering Rad Tech:
- 2 year degree (maybe plus 1 year for pre-reqs) so less schooling is needed.
- would be face to face with people and on my feet
- seems like the job is fairly routine, which I would enjoy (I considered sterile processing tech for the same reason and because it’s pretty independent, but the pay just doesn’t seem worth it compared to a rad tech)
- seems like a better WLB (I don’t have to worry about work after I clock out)
- meaningful contribution to society
In still employed and not going to quit my job to go back to school unless I’m 100% certain. I live in NJ, 30 mins from philly (so job opportunities?), Rad Tech would be a pay decrease from $45 -> maybe $30(?) per hour but, if I’m full time I still think that’s livable. Also could Rad Tech be considered a long term career?
Sorry for the long post but would really appreciate if you thought a Rad Tech would be right for me if I decide to change careers. Thank you!
