Do spells backfire?

Hi. I used to practice witchcraft and spellwork a few years ago, i stopped doing spellwork three years ago but continued using my tarot, doing my spiritual stuff etc. i was wondering if the whole “spells backfire” was true? And do protection spells prevent that? Years ago i made spells and hexes involving people so maybe thats why they backfired, i didnt have any protection spell whatsoever. This time i made one before making a success spell so maybe this wont backfire because it doesnt involve someone else’s freewill. Please tell me what you think!!
