New Diagnosis

General/Advice

So I (23F) recently got unofficially diagnosed with PCOS. I say unofficially because I apparently don’t meet 2 out of 3 of the Rotterdam diagnostic criteria, I meet 2 of them (very irregular/skipped periods, and right ovary appears polycystic on ultrasound), but because only one ovary appears polycystic, my OBGYN doesn’t count that as a qualifying criteria. However, she listed it as a diagnosis in my chart and told me that I basically do have PCOS, just not in both ovaries. I did some research and found out there is a condition called Unilateral PCOS (affecting only one ovary), so I believe that is what I technically have.

I am struggling with knowing where to start in my healing process. I know PCOS can never be cured, but that there are steps you can take to help symptoms and prevent it from getting worse, as well as help things like fertility and regular menstrual cycles to come back. I don’t want to be on hormonal birth control (and I don’t think it’s much of a “treatment”to begin with), and since I’m not officially diagnosed, I can’t take any medications or anything typically prescribed for PCOS. I am overweight and want to lose weight, but I’ve heard that it can be more difficult with PCOS, different exercise regimens are better/worse, certain foods should/shouldn’t be consumed, supplements and teas are needed, etc.

I’ve seen a lot of things online, but it’s hard to know what to trust, and it’s just a lot of information all at once. Where do I begin? What things worked and didn’t work for you? Thankful for any and all advice!
