How does Trajan's free trade post work

I mean on the surface its obvious, you get a fre trade post for every city you settle?

Ok cool, but you dont get trading post bonuses until you send traders through them, and traders create trading posts when they reach a city for the first time.. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the free trade post?

So wtf is the point of the free trading post, what am I missing?
