Is therapy a waste of time for me?
TW: suicide is mentioned briefly
I genuinely believe therapy is a good resource for people who need it, but I just don't know if it works for me. I'm depressed and deal with reoccurring suicidal ideation. I honestly didn't clock that as worthy of therapy until I attempted last November because I didn't think it was serious enough, which makes me wonder if I really do need therapy and just can't tell? I did 10 sessions with a university counsellor but genuinely felt like I was just going so my friends and family would worry about me less. I don't feel like I got anything good out of it, and every single time I just felt like I was doing therapy 'wrong'. I ended up dropping out of uni for mental health struggles that prevented me from finishing assignments, and since then I've gone from having suicidal thoughts multiple times a day to once or twice a week. With how expensive therapy is I just don't feel like it's worth my time and money. My parents are understandably still worried, and keep pressuring me to go to therapy which also makes me think maybe they are waiting for some change that I don't know is supposed to happen? I don't even know what I'm expecting out of this post, just rambling at this point.
