Transitioning back to 100% Events after 7 years in Tech—what certifications actually matter?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some career advice. I’ve spent the last 7 years working in tech in a high-level compliance and relations role. While my "official" job title isn't Event Coordinator, I’ve stayed very active in the space:

  • I’ve spent years designing and executing internal culture events, celebrations, and team-building initiatives for large organizations.
  • I frequently support larger corporate events (15000 attendees), managing check-ins, navigating guest flow, and serving as a primary resource for event logistics.
  • Prior to my current role, I worked in event staff and VIP guest operations for a major professional sports team, managing thousands of guests.
  • My "hidden" background is actually in the arts—I was a dance teacher for years, produced annual showcases, and even co-directed a large production for a health charity.

I realized recently that I’m much happier when I’m producing experiences than when I’m focused on technical analysis. I want to move into a full-time Event Coordinator or Associate Producer role 100% of the time, ideally staying within the tech sector.

I already have a Project Management certificate. Are there specific "heavy hitter" certifications I should look into to prove I’m serious about this pivot?

I’m looking at the CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) or maybe something tech-specific like the DES (Digital Event Strategist). Any thoughts on those certificate?
