friend of 14 years showing signs he wants to end the friendship, why?
I’ve known this friend since 2012. We went to the same schools and graduated together. He’s been a huge part of my life—his mom even used to take care of me when I was younger while my mom was working. I also used to go on beach vacations with his family. As we got older, we remained really close.
He was actually the one who introduced me to making music and becoming an artist. We even made music together for a while. After high school, we ended up working at the same job, but that only happened because I encouraged him not to lose faith after our interview didn’t go well. The manager didn’t want to hire us at first, and he was being really negative about it, but I told him to stay hopeful. I also helped him get his first job during school, so I’ve always tried to motivate and support him. I’ve been nothing but a loyal and supportive friend.
The only time we ever clashed was when I felt he could be a bit closed-minded, but I still respected him regardless.
To keep it short, the last time we actually spoke was September 28, 2025. I wished him a happy birthday on October 1, and after that, we didn’t really talk. When my birthday came around in January, he just sent a cupcake emoji with confetti. I thanked him and invited him to celebrate, but he said he wasn’t in the right mindset and wanted to focus on himself.
Since then, it’s just been silence.
In March 2026, I reached out again because my grandma was diagnosed with cancer. I asked if he wanted to hang out because I missed him and needed his energy, but he never even opened my message. A mutual friend told me he also tried reaching out and got ignored too.
Then yesterday, I found out he blocked me on Instagram—even though I don’t follow him. He tends to deactivate and reactivate different accounts a lot because he believes phones are a waste of time and bad for our brains. I understand that, but my main question is: why block me when I don’t even follow him? It makes me feel like he searched me up just to block me. What’s also confusing is that he didn’t block our mutual friend—I asked him—but he still hasn’t replied to him either.
I also texted him back in November asking if he was still making music, and his response was really dry, like he didn’t want anything to do with me.
We were friends for 14 years. His parents are my sister’s godparents, and our families know each other. I still talk to his brothers occasionally, but we’re not close like that.
If I did something wrong, I feel like I would know—but this whole situation just feels really eerie and confusing.
Should I be mad? How would you approach this? What would you do?
