I hate my topic

Seeking advice-personal

I'm a second year phd in measuring engineering. that being said my previous experience and education was in molecular biology/genetics. Why did choose this? circumstances and promises of finding common ground (like use of engineering on biology).

While it was difficult I quite understand my topic now and even learnt to code/ process signals/ the physics behind it, but... I hate it. I just don't feel like it's leading anywhere. the topic is based on old techniques that aren't promising (and as my results show).

There is slight biology element but it's very basic level (experiments on cells). I can't find interesting conferences or summer schools based on my thesis (requirement by uni) and I certainly won't be continuing it.

As my second year approaches to an end, I am thinking about quitting. Slight problem is that with years my motivation and energy is slowly draining and I don't think I could apply again to a different place. I want to stay in academia but work on topics that are interesting to me.

That being said, my supervisor and director are very encouraging, there won't be any problem for me to defend and pass, I have several manuscripts published and I don't think will struggle much with the thesis. also it pays way above average wage in my country (I make twice my husbands salary).

TL;DR I don't like my topic and trying to figure out should I quit or just finish and try to find fulfilment after phd.
