I7 980X - Is 4.4Ghz really the Limit?
Putting together the "ultimate" 2010 Gaming Rig for YT and my CPU is hitting a brick wall at 4.4GHz.
33 Multiplier
133 BCLK
1.44V
Asus P6T Deluxe V1
Load Lime Calibration Enabled
Virtualisation disabled - Can't make it to Windows otherwise.
24GB Corsair Vengance DDR3 1600 (9,9,9,24)
I'm watercooling so temps aren't the issue. And I've got fans pointed at the VRM heatsinks just in case.
At 1.45V I can get 34 Multiplier and 4.55Ghz to boot to Windows semi stable but any load causes applications to crash. (Note, not windows.)
Bumping to 1.48V improves stability a lot but it still can't complete a Cinebench R23 Run or 3DMark without crashing the applications. (Note, Windows does not crash)
Touching the BCLK at all prevents Windows from booting, likely a RAM speed issue there.
Any tips? Is there something I'm missing or am I just at the limit of my chip?
I've seen some reports that these chips can manage 4.6Ghz or even one report of 4.8Ghz with a golden sample. But seems I don't have one of those.
4.4 is likely more than enough to call this the fastest chip of 2010 but I really wanted 4.55-4.6 so I could show the generational improvement from the 980X to the 3930K at the same clock speeds.
