Player frustration and the design of the game.

:M2026:Marathon (2026) Discussion

I get the sense that a lot of people are frustrated with the PVP encounters for the wrong reasons and externalize their frustration onto the design of the game. A lot of people here act like they are being personally victimized by the matchmaking and want bungie to add a PVE only mode or some shit.

There will almost always be players better than you in a lobby, your job is to survive and exfil. Thus if you want to maximize your success you cannot do any activity without considering the consequences on your run.

For instance If you have a particularly difficult quest you need to get done start it later after teams have already left or you have already eliminated a team. Even if you are doing PVE, try to take height and maximize advantages in case someone tries to push you. Use utility like claymores to block typical entrances. Don’t get caught in the open and don’t take frequent lanes of traversal (lay low). Don’t make noise if you can. All of these decisions require no skill expression but rather an expression of strategy.

If a team has purple shields or outmatches you, you need to force 3v1s position yourself in a way where you can play off of each-other. If they out-range you try to either push up or disengage and hope the noise they made is drawing attention to them.

A lot of the losses people have are because they failed to account for these kinds of factors and are unable or unwilling to recognize and learn from their mistakes. You need to be able to do this to have better outcomes and to enjoy this game. You cannot approach anything you do mindlessly just expecting to have fun. This game and this genre is not like an arena shooter or COD. Every time I die I assess the things I think contributed to my failure. And what I can do to ensure my success later. There are few instances where I had no choices left that would have improved my success and that is usually due to a miscalculation/miscommunication in my team or with whoever I’m filling with.

I’m also not a sweat, I have like 50 hours. I loose most of the fights I’m taking right now but that’s because I’m still learning and trying to understand how to succeed.

TLDR: you have more options than you think, just try not to w key every fight when you have no advantages. Casuals can succeed but you can’t just expect to exfil without making solid decisions.
