Will an AM4 cooler fit on an AM5 motherboard socket?

I’ve seen a lot of mixed info lately about CPU cooler compatibility between AM4 and AM5, and it feels like one of those things that should be straightforward but somehow isn’t. Some people say AMD kept the same mounting layout, while others warn that not every cooler will work depending on how it installs.

From what I’ve read, the mounting hole spacing between AM4 and AM5 is actually the same, which should mean compatibility in most cases. ([Tom's Hardware Forum][1]) But then I also saw that AM5 uses a fixed backplate now, so coolers that require swapping the backplate might run into issues. ([Noctua][2])

That’s where I’m confused.

I’m planning an upgrade to AM5 soon, and I already have a decent AM4 air cooler that I’d really prefer to reuse instead of buying a new one. The cooler uses its own mounting hardware, and I’m not 100% sure if it relies on the stock backplate or replaces it.

I came across a Reddit comment that summed it up like this:

“If it uses the stock backplate, it works… if it needs a custom one, it won’t.” ([Reddit][3])

So now I’m kinda stuck second-guessing everything.

Has anyone here actually reused an AM4 cooler on AM5 successfully? How can I tell for sure if mine will fit before I tear everything apart?

Would appreciate any real-world experiences or tips
