Anyone else love BL manga with unique art styles?
I’ve been getting more into BL (Boys’ Love) manga lately, and one thing I didn’t expect to care about as much as I do now is the art style. Like… story matters obviously, but the visual style can completely change how everything feels.
I recently came across Sleeping on Paper Boats and it honestly caught me off guard—in a good way. The art feels really creative and expressive, almost delicate in some moments but still emotionally heavy. It stands out a lot compared to some of the more “standard” manga styles I’ve seen, and it made the story hit way harder.
At the same time, I just finished Black Paradox by Junji Ito, and it reminded me how much I appreciate artists who really lean into a distinct visual identity. His style is obviously way more horror-driven, but the level of detail and atmosphere he creates is insane.
It got me thinking about how much art style shapes the emotional experience, whether it’s BL, horror, or anything in between.
So now I’m curious:
👉 What BL manga have you read with really unique or standout art styles?
👉 Do you prefer cleaner, polished styles or more experimental ones?
👉 And for anyone who also reads horror—do you think artists like Junji Ito influence what you enjoy visually in other genres?
Would love some recommendations 🙏
