Ruminating about being mischaracterized
Long story short, I feel like people frequently create a caricature version of me in their heads and then hold me responsible for it. I’m trying to tell myself that it isn’t my responsibility, but I honestly can’t tell. Can anyone relate to any of this?
Some examples:
I have started running as a hobby. Growing up, I was horrible at anything involving hand-eye coordination (I have horrible proprioception) so it was amazing to finally find a form of physical activity I like. I didn’t think I was being obnoxious about it - 90% of the time, when I *do* talk about it, it’s with my dad. He’s also a runner, so it’s something we bond over. However, my brothers seem to think that I am stuck-up or trying to gloat. They seem sad when the see that I am making progress. I have started questioning myself, so I don’t bring it up at all anymore.
I’ve also struggled with an ED throughout my life. It’s something I keep to myself - I absolutely do not, EVER, make comments about other peoples’ weights. In fact when my mother and brother make jokes along those lines, I’m the “party pooper” because I don’t laugh along. But they’ve made some comments suggesting that I look down on others for eating certain things or being overweight. When I fell into a depression and gained weight, they suddenly started treating me a bit better.
Third… a lot of my autistic traits (routines, sensory issues, flat affect) get interpreted as being “high strung” and my brothers seem to want to “knock me down a peg”, constantly. My youngest brother, for example, >!joked on three separate occasions about pissing on me so I wouldn’t feel in control anymore!< He made a DND character that was very obviously inspired by me (I know that sounds paranoid, but a lot of details are very specific to me) who is basically an eldritch entity disguised as a human, with the mission to earn a human’s trust in order to take what she wants from him and later hurt him.
My other brother >!stood over my hospital bed when I had to go inpatient and seemed extremely pleased - even more so when I told him how horrible the experience was!<
I also can’t count the times I’ve been told that I’m b*tchy for my resting expression, or assumed to be judging someone.
This is a recurring pattern and I am starting to feel like I am actually a bad person. A lot of times I’ve been in a situation where my first impression with someone is bad, but once they get to know me they warm to me. One of my coworkers who has been at odds with me for awhile just stood up for me the other day, in a very unexpected way. But I feel as though I am actually manipulating people without even meaning to. It makes me want to crawl in a hole and just not interact so I don’t have the chance to hurt someone.
Sorry this turned into a ramble
