Most of my family has turned me into the outsider after a disagreement with one person
I'm a first time reddit poster, fairly new to the app in general so please forgive any etiquette missteps..
Family involved in the story:
Jen : the youngest niece and subject of this story
Amy: older niece and sister to Jen
Mom: my and my sister and brothers mom
Ashley: my sister
we do have more family members here close by but these are the ones most closely related to the story.
Backstory: This will be a pretty long story so get a snack.. I'm 37F, I have three kids of my own. I also have a younger brother (also with two boys) and an older sister (ditto, two girls). When my sister had her children, I was a teenager and we were a lot closer in those days. My sister, as children, was my worst enemy and later turned best friend lol. We have both always loved each other's children and both of us have been there for each other's kids throughout life difficulties (sickness, depression, catastrophic events, etc). Our kids frequently rotated between our houses, most all the kids consider my home as their childhood home. So many good memories. One of my nieces, Jen, struggled through her school age years, she has several emotional issues, such as manic depression and ptsd. And I don't mean she struggled academically, she is quite intelligent, but she had an astonishing amount of bullies. Both nieces were on behavioral and sleeping medications for quite a few years as well. My sister's children are both grown now, Amy married, but Jen is unmarried and has two children also. She was in a longterm relationship with their father and last fall discovered he'd been cheating on her.
Last fall: By this time they'd moved to Jens boyfriends hometown which is a solid 11-12 hour drive from where she grew up and where I currently live, as well as her mother and sister and the rest of our family. Jen and her mother had had a falling out, and the people who were able to go retrieve her once she decided to leave him was minimal. My mom paid for the gas and I made the drive, being the only one with a sound enough vehicle. Her sister Amy went with me. We carefully planned the trip (I do have a family to look after as well as somewhat of an authority position at my 40 hour/week job) so that we would leave early on in the day and make it back late that night. And away we went. A fun road trip to be had for sure, even if exhausting. We arrived and loaded Jen and her babies and their belongings into the truck I was driving (technically my bf's truck, insurance and tags and vehicle wellcare provided by him). That vehicle was the most mechanically sound so of course it was the one we elected to make the trip, and it also has back row seating so plenty of room for Littles and Mama Jen back there. Looking back, of course I can see how this would be such a stressful trip for Jen. she had her babies in the truck and was on her way to a New Life and while not an unfamiliar place, a place she had not been in a very long time. I have reassured her since the idea of this trip bloomed that I loved her like a daughter and would have her back no matter what. I left a rather abusive and violent relationship a few years ago and of course I would be there for another fellow woman that felt the need to ditch a sorry man. and one that I helped raise at that? of course I'm going to be there for her. I was even excited, so glad to have Jen and her babies close by and able to spend more time together as a family and with our children interacting and getting to know one another more. We had an extra vehicle for her to drive and while sleeping arrangements would have been tight, we would have made it work. We've all piled into this house for so many sleepovers over the last 14 years this house has been ours.
by the time we made it back my family was in bed asleep and we decided we would bring in their necessities that night and get the rest out the next afternoon, as I did have work very early the next morning. So we all went to bed and the next morning I went to work. After the day was over, I Checked in with Jen and my oldest daughter (16) as they were at home with my other two kids (ages 9 and 6) and then obviously Jens two babies as well (both under 3 years). I asked if they needed anything, informed them I'd be grabbing pizza for dinner and stopping by the store for drinks, paper plates, etc. I made my way home with all these things and I brought the pizza in first. Well I tried to. I opened the passenger door and out fell the pizza. The box bounces off the step of the door, springing open and dumping my bbq chicken pizza unceremoniously onto its sauced top. Face first in the grass like a drunk prom date. Perfect, I ruined half of dinner lol. So I come in the house with what pizza I could salvage and dump it all on the kitchen table. I said hello to all of the little children on my way through the living room to the kitchen and to my niece and my oldest daughter.
At this point is where things go very south very fast. My niece turns to look at me from the living room couch and asks me if I got the pacifiers. I look up and say oh they're still in the truck but I'll grab them in just a second. She doesn't say anything but gets up and goes outside. I follow her thinking she's going to retrieve the pacifiers she requested but she's pulling bags of their belongings angrily from the bed of the truck and in tears. When I realize she's in tears I'm immediately horrified and saying what's wrong, what happened, are you okay? She begins screaming at me, telling me that I didn't have to talk to her like that inside and her feelings mattered and she didn't deserve to be talked down to like that. She makes her way back inside, still screaming and I follow, mostly in shock and tripping over my own words to get out that I had no idea what she meant, I wasn't and was never upset with her, if I appeared frustrated it was because I just dropped our dinner in the dirt and I was sad. I like my barbecue chicken pizza LOL and it had been a long day. I spent many hours at work on my feet, I work at a fast food restaurant. I was ready to be home and off my feet and talk to all of my wonderful family members to see what their day had been like and if it had been any better than mine. but here we are in the middle of my living room with all of the children watching, her screaming at me while I try to yell back that I don't even understand what she's talking about.
At one point she's jumping up and down screaming at me so angry that she almost stepped on one of her own children while jumping up and down. She didn't see her there by her feet because she was screaming at me and looking at me. Finally she sits back down on the couch and gets her phone out and calls I don't even know who, crying and screaming to them that I'm the most horrible abusive bitch in the world and would someone please come get her she needs to leave now. I walked away for a few minutes hoping that the situation would simmer down.
I walked back into the living room and tried to talk to her in a normal level tone and she just turned around and screamed at me to leave her the fuck alone. so I threw my hands up and I walked outside, all of my children had vacated the house when the argument started. When she came in screaming, my oldest daughter loaded up her younger siblings into her car and drove them to their paternal grandparents house a few minutes away so thankfully they didn't have to see her at her very worst, but her young children did. my boyfriend eventually came home while she was still here and told her that she needed to leave if this was how she treated people that came to her rescue. he was very unpleasant about it and pretty rude. eventually her estranged mother and her husband arrived, and this began the opening of their relationship. they loaded all her things into their truck and drove her to my mother's house, which would be Jen's grandmother. she has been there ever since then. I tried to talk to everyone when this happened and told them what had went down that night, at least as far as my side goes, and while they all agree that this is how Jen has acted in the past, there's really nothing they can do about it. and of course there's not, I don't expect them to do anything.
I had hoped with us being family that this problem would eventually blow over and we would make up and be friends again. we used to talk on video chat everyday, sometimes in a group call with other family members and sometimes just us, but we always talked. my mother invited me to come over for Christmas but it was really tense and really awkward and I left feeling like an outsider. my own children have been invited over for parties or even to stay the night but I haven't been invited over since then and no one calls me anymore. my family doesn't check in with me. Jen has blocked me on every social media and has reached out a few times when I wanted to try to work things out to tell me that she is not interested and basically to go fuck myself. none of the rest of the family seems to want to interfere with this and judging by their silence, they don't seem to mind it. I don't hear from them anymore, but they get together and have family dinners or go out. they talk on the phone and they watch each other's kids and they do things that family does. but I'm on the outside of that and I feel like I always will be. and I still do not see what I did wrong. I feel like that's a loaded question here on Reddit but here I am. it is now the end of March 2026 and this happened well before christmas, well before Thanksgiving. I feel like this separation will go on endlessly. the family that I used to talk to every day and used to be my support circle is no longer talking to me. sure I reach out to them but they don't answer me for days and sometimes weeks at a time. I try to call but no answer.
at the very least my mother has always been the one that would talk to me throughout everything. I've had a troubled history with addiction and came through the other side and have been sober for more than 7 years now. needless to say I have definitely lived through some other struggles in my life. when I was addicted, addiction wasn't as widely accepted and talked about as it is now. and in those years there wasn't many places in my area to help people who were addicted to any substance. now places are everywhere and I thank God for it. during my addicted phase, my family shut me out then as well. I'm starting to wonder if this is a pattern and if I'm not just better off trying to distance myself from my family all together. I love them all so much and I have always believed that family is more important than anything. but I definitely don't feel important to anyone and this is going on for so long. and it's not even the first time that I have been the family pariah. I'm beginning to wonder if I should even try to salvage these relationships or if maybe I should just make new friends, create a family instead of relying on my blood family. any advice would be so appreciated.
TLDR: again I apologize for this being such a long story, and towards the end even my grammar started to slip I'm sure. I'm using my speech to text to try to get this whole story down before I chicken out again. I've started to post this so many times and thought why would anyone care? and then I would back out. so here I am making this big huge first post and wondering what the general public thinks about this situation and what you would do if you were me. I hope you are all safe and well and happy and if you read this entire short novel thank you so much for your time and attention to my small life problems💙💙
