Why do people leave their car alarms running for several minutes even during false alarms?

Even if they don't feel embarrassed that their car alarm is running, wouldn't it be in their own interest to shut it off sooner if only to save on electricity? Do they lack the means to turn it off remotely? Do they park in a place from which they can't hear the alarm from well inside the building? What about in apartment parking lots close enough to every room in the apartment building to hear them from there?
