My dentist said he can’t help with dry s0cket, is that normal?

I went to another dentist in tears from the pain and they took me back immediately and put some kind of paste on my extraction site and the pain immediately went away. Needlessly to say I have permanently switched dentists. I was just wondering if dentists think this was as crazy as I do. They also didn’t recommend another dentist or anything to me they just hung up.
