Aldeyjarfoss in AWD vs 4x4?

I've searched but not found anything really solid on this -- does anyone know if the F26 to get to Aldeyjarfoss requires legit 4WD, or could it be done in an AWD? We have an AWD (it's a VW ID.4 if that's helpful!) rented but this is a spot I'd dearly love to go during our trip (end of May). I don't want to get in over our heads on a road we can't handle, but I also don't want to miss out on this magical spot if our car would be likely to handle it.
