Mishandled Physical Confrontation With My Son?

Teenager 13-19 Years

So... this just happened. I have a set of chores I have set as an expectation for my son. It's literally just emptying the dishwasher and the recycling to the recycling bin. I don't feel like it's a lot to ask. I keep it light because he's in school - dual enrolled in college and high school with an early start program - and he has commitments to a local theater company. He is 2 months away from 18.

Today, I am noticing the recycling is overflowing. We have had multiple - like at least every 2 weeks for the past year - discussions about keeping this empty. When I told him to get it done, I caught a lot of attitude. Yelling, swearing, etc. I told him to get it done. It's not hard and we've had a lot of conversations about it. I am tired of discussing it, etc. During the shouting match, he decides to buck up to me for a fight. I am not small. I am 205 lbs and hit the gym pretty regularly. Instead of a physical fight, I told him if he wants to act like this, he can leave. No key. No phone. He can come back when he's ready to do the bare minimum tasks set forth without the attitude. I should also note that we are both trained martial artists. I have a boxing and wrestling background, and he has a muay thai and jiu jitsu background. It's not a good situation for "fighting it out" like my dumbass family seems to think I should have done.

So he left. And now I'm pretty sure I just fucked up big time. Thing is, I didn't really have parents and I don't know anybody with teenager. I know 0 competent adults to discuss this with, so I guess here I am on reddit instead of asking ChatGPT what I should have done differently. The couple people I did ask are overly supportive of what I've done, but I can't help but think this was not the way to handle it. I just have no idea what the proper way to handle it actually is.

Update 04.02.2026:
So we had a talk today and the gist of it is he is having a hard time juggling all his current commitments. Job, theater, college, high school, voice lessons, choir, girlfriend, chores, etc. Not really an excuse for a blow up, but we discussed managing commitments. It's better to do excellent and do less than to do mediocre but do a lot IMO.
