So this morning while I was having my coffee and taking care of my own foster cats, I stumbled upon this post that is blowing up in r/cats. You can read the post and see the poor souls that lost their lives due to the OPs incompetence. I called them out several times in the comments dropping an f bomb and calling the OP a moron a couple times for their obvious neglect for the care of these cats. I’m a passionate person and when I see animal abuse and neglect, I will call them out and show little restraint when doing so. I was then banned from r/cats for telling them how to raise and take “care” of their cats. Which is far from what I told them which is that they should not be allowed to own or foster any pet after this incident. It’s neglect and animal abuse and I’d like to see someone with half a brain to challenge that analysis.

Here are multiple points that highlight my frustration with this post in particular.

1. The OP admits to leaving SEVEN cats in a THREE HUNDRED square foot cabin ALONE with a GAS stove that they LEAVE CARDBOARD BOXES on top of. That is irresponsible.

2. OP also admits to housesitting for a friend for a WEEK. Which leads me to believe, they have been neglecting the cats for an entire WEEK aside from stopping by once a day to feed them and they’re young. If you know anything about fostering young cats is that they need much more attention than an older house cat does. Someone should be at the house for extended periods of time taking care of them. Both people should not have been staying at their friends house.

3. You’re fostering cats yet you seem to have not taken any safety precautions in your home to prevent things like a stove accidentally being turned on by a cat while you’re away from home for an extended period of time. You could have turned the gas off, outfitted the stove with knob protectors, consider getting rid of a gas stove before you foster kittens because you were too unintelligent to implement the safety measures I just listed, you could have constructed a play pen where the cats can’t get out while you’re away, preventing this whole thing from ever happening.

This was 100% preventable yet no safety precautions were exhibited in this absolute tragedy. This is neglect, this is abuse, these people should not be able to own or foster any pets and r/cats should finally be confronted with enabling these posts without any scrutiny from the moderators. It seems to me if it generates upvotes and engagement, the moderators could give less of a fuck about the animal abuse being put on display. This is just one post of many where I’ve seen people post their incompetence and get thousands of sympathetic comments and positive interactions without one person calling into question the responsibility of the persons involved in similar tragedies.

Didn’t know where to post this and if anyone agrees, let me know where this can reach more people. This is absolute bullshit.

r/cats might support animal abuse without knowing
