Anyone else’s family just do….. nothing?

My family lives in this kind of low energy, do nothing routine, and they seem to think it’s normal. Maybe it is? but from the outside, it feels really sad. It’s not about money either.

My dad works, then comes home and watches TV. That’s basically it.

My mom is a stay-at-home parent. Does absolutely nothing but complain, stress, and play games on her phone. Just extremely lazy and negative if I’m being honest. She avoids anything that actually involves parenting—going to events, taking kids to practices, cooking, cleaning, helping with projects. She sleeps all day and tries to run the house like a kind of dictator.

My little sisters go straight to their rooms, shut the door, and sit on their phones or tablets. I don’t even fully blame them—it feels like they’re avoiding being around my mom, and if they ask to do anything, the answer is almost always no. Their whole summer break was basically spent sitting in their rooms while their friends were out doing activities or traveling. One of them is in 5th grade and still doesn’t know how to tie her shoes—not because of any developmental issue, just lack of attention and guidance. Even basic things like brushing teeth or showering don’t get reinforced unless it’s a school day.

My brother and his girlfriend (they’re in their 20s) just work and then go back to his room and sit on the computer all the time. I don’t even know if they actually like each other or if it’s just inertia. I’ve never even seen them show affection.

My older brother used to be jobless for years, just playing video games in the basement. He’s improved in that sense, but now he’s extremely overweight.

Even something simple like going out to eat feels awkward—we don’t talk, and one of my sisters will just sit there on her phone playing games like “Adopt Me.” There’s no real connection. No memories being made.

I know this probably sounds harsh, but it’s frustrating to watch. It feels like the family culture is setting everyone up to stagnate, and it’s hard not to see how that could shape who they become.

I lived on my own in another state for years, and honestly, growing up felt a lot like this too. I’ve done what I can to break out of that lifestyle, which is maybe why it hits harder now seeing it continue.
