Why do I attract crazy in bosses/lawyer friends?

I Need To Vent :Anger:

Long post - don’t read if don’t have time

i hate being an attorney. I wish I could do anything else, but I lack talent and my loans are too high, so I am stuck.

Was just reflecting over the past 3 - 4 years about how many crazy bosses or mentors I have had.

My most recent job had a supervisor that would call me at 6:30 pm at night to revise a letter (with no deadline) or when I was in the bathroom, call me repeatedly until I answered.

I left because I am pregnant and no way I am dealing with that shit.

My job before that, I had a supervisor that posed as my “friend”. But when I was having chronic issues with miscarriage and couldn’t fly for hearings, she would make all of these passive aggressive comments about my billing being high to the client because I couldn’t fly, scrutinize the subject lines of my emails, when in the hospital for a D and C due to miscarriage, I had to revise an appeal doc and knowing I was coming off anesthesia, reprimanded me for all of the mistakes. Additionally, she told me at least once a week that a certain client hated me (I could understand, I made costly mistakes).

However, when said client found out I was going to another firm, she actually called me to say how excited she was and then began referring cases to me individually. She has also called me on another cases attorneys at my new firm are doing.

Even the mentors I seek out suck - I had one that purportedly wanted to help me because she has 25 years more experience than me (we met through friends) and all she did was talk about how she was the only female in her firm that could try cases ( a lie ), how all young attorneys are stupid, and say snide things about “my aptitude as an attorney.”

My present boss seems ok, but I got no training at all. Granted, it’s in a similar field where I worked for 3 years so I am pretty familiar and we worked at same firm before. because no one really told me about the billing, I have been using the billing model from my old firm (each email was a.2). Today I get a long email about my problematic billing. I responded that I have just been using what I know from the old firm and did she want me to just do .1 for emails and .1 for strategy. My old firm was .2 so I assumed the same. The email just seemed accusatory when I really am just doing the only thing I know. I didn’t apologize in the response email, I should have, but part of me is sick of apologizing for things I had no way of knowing.

I am just tired. I wish I could be a SAHM. That’s the only time I feel at peace or confident. I wanted to help people when I went to law school, and now I just want to get through the day, get my check, and not talk to a soul.
