Hear no Evil (Rewrite)

Fanfic

Hello everyone, I’m sorry to tell you all but lately I feel as if the direction that Hear no Evil has been going isn’t what I believe the story should. I started it originally to get my own world out there, to see how people would view the species and characters, and so far, it’s turned out how I’ve expected.

With all that said, I decided to make the decision to rewrite my fic with a new narrative, and I wanted to share part of a chapter I’ve written to see everyone’s opinion. It will still include many of the same characters, but their roles and personalities may change.

…I followed behind Kaleb as we walked along the warm, damp halls of the building. It was unsettling, no one’s ever been inside of a Blight’s structure for this long and lived. It gave me some time to study the walls a bit. It was disgusting, flesh and bone molded into shape, it’s grey color like that of a corpse. The dim lighting didn’t help with the eeriness of it. Kaleb’s guards found the building even more unnerving than I did. Back in the Milky Way, our soldiers were the pinnacle of strength and confidence. But here in Andromeda, stuck in this horror that is a building, they appear as nothing more than children afraid of their own shadow. Their heads darted around, hands shaking in fear.

“W-what if t-they don’t let us leave? They could t-trap us here. Have their monsters crawl out the walls and tear us apart.”

Kaleb turned to the guard who spoke. “If you’re going to speak in such a manner, you should have stayed cowering on the ship like the Venlil. Their envoy invited us to speak, and if this gives us a chance to end this conflict, then I won’t pass up this opportunity.” He then looked over at me. “Bumaal, come over here a moment.” I moved past the guards, making sure not to surprise them too much, I didn’t want either of them to accidentally discharge their weapon at a time like this. “If anything happens, make sure you get as many people out of here as you can. I’ll try my best to keep the peace, but these things aren’t known for being reasonable.”

I nodded my head, understanding that things could go south very, very fast with the kind of person we were about to speak with. At the end of the hall, we came to a blank wall. For a moment, we stood there confused, wondering if we had gone in the wrong direction. Then, with a sick sound, an orifice opened that led into a large chamber. Such horrid beings to design such a contraption. I thought to myself. However, my train of thought got disrupted as we saw what was inside the room. Rising out of the center was some ort of pillar, seemingly growing out of the floor. at its top, multiple faces covered it, each one with closed eyes and vertical mouths, a set of crossed arms below each face. I assume this is who we were here to speak to, though I wasn’t sure if we were speaking to one person anymore.

Kaleb stepped forward. I could tell he was trying to act confident, but he was nervous. “Hello, my name is Prince Kaleb, thank you for your invitation.”

For a moment, it didn’t speak, but when it did, it did so with authority. “Your gratitude is neither needed nor wanted. I asked you here because you have authority over your kind in our galaxy.”

“I was just trying to show pleasantries.”

“Pleasantries, is it? Tell me, did anyone find it pleasant why you arrived here? Decided that this galaxy was yours and yours alone? The answer, you will find, is not favorable to you.”

“So you brought us here to do what, insult us?”

“Hardly, simply to pass on a demand. One that would be most effective in person.”

“A demand? That’s not exactly the best way to start negotiations, is it?”

“Do not flatter yourself. We are not here for negotiations. What do you have to offer me that we do not already have? Our demand is this, Leave. Make things easier on both of us and go back to your own galaxy where you belong.”

“Wh- you expect us to just leave? What gives you the authority to try and force us out?”

“Must I answer that question? Our biomass, our form has spread throughout the galaxy for centuries. You are newcomers, you do not belong.”

“Are you on some sort of holy mission, spreading your ‘biomass’ through the galaxy?”

“Holy? I see no god where I stand. That is all you see, is it not? Everything must require faith, a god’s reason for existing. If a god such as yours existed, why would a being like myself be allowed to exist? I am a testament to your own ineptitude.”

I looked at Kaleb, who seemed to be getting more frustrated with this, thing. He then straightened his posture and tried to look into one of its eyes. No, bad idea. I thought, and tried to signal him not to try it, but he didn’t listen. “Alright, I was hoping to avoid this, but you left me no choice.” Before Kaleb could speak, one of its eyes shot open and looked down at Kaleb, but instead of speaking, Kaleb began to scream in pain, falling over.

“Ah, fascinating. Your species’ arrogance never ceases to amaze me. You have a curious mind, Prince. So much potential wasted on someone such as yourself…”
