Role of Government in Marriage

**** Specifically is No Fault Divorce being allowed since 1970s by the goverment a good thing****

I was having a conversation with my friend about No-Fault Divorce, which became legal around the time of the sexual revolution in America. Before that, if you wanted a divorce, you had to prove that there was some sort of fault that had happened (abuse, adultery, abandonment)

My thinking on this was as follows.

- Divorce is wrong in most cases from the Christian perspective and should be avoided at all costs

- Divorce is worse for society as it attacks the nuclear family, which is a pillar of our society, and causes complications in future generations

- No-fault divorce not only encourages people to take marriage less seriously, but also encourages them to get divorced more quickly and for smaller reasons

- Therefore, no-fault divorce was a mistake to allow in by the government.

My friends' thoughts were as follows

- Yes, from a Christian perspective, divorce is wrong and should be a last resort

- Giving the Government more control over what they say you can and can't do is a bad thing

- No-fault divorce saved many women from abusive relationships where abuse was hard to prove

- No- Fault Divorce, while bad from a moral perspective, should not be regulated by the government because having them tell you what is right and wrong is a dangerous game. ( he brought up screen addiction and how he doesn't think the government should be able to regulate screen time, even though we know that screen addiction is bad.)

(I brought up, well then what about LGBTQ marriages? and he said even if he disagrees with them, he guesses they should be allowed on the federal/ civil level since he doesn't think the government needs to be involved with marriages at all)

Now, I agree with my friend, I like individual freedom and less government jurisdiction.
I still feel that this is an overall negative for society, but I wanted more opinions.
What do you guys think is the role of government in marriage? Should the government see marriage as a binding contract between two people, the way Christians see it?
