People frustrated and saying James never lets Shelley speak are missing the whole point of the show
This is one of those moments where people are reading neurotypical intent into autistic behaviour.
James isn’t not letting her speak in a controlling or misogynistic way, he’s getting anxious, over-talking, and trying to manage the situation the best way he knows how. That is the autistic trait we’re literally watching the show to understand.
He’s also pretty self-aware and clearly trying to work on himself, which matters. The whole point of the show is seeing people navigate relationships with real social challenges, sometimes that’s awkward, imperfect, or overwhelming. It doesn’t automatically mean there’s a negative motive behind it.
Saying he should “just let her speak” also assumes he has full control over his autism, which isn’t how it works. At this point, it feels like being multiple seasons in and still missing how autism actually affects communication.
Also, I’ve seen people say James’s story has already been told, but the show is literally called Love on the Spectrum. This is his love story continuing, and part of that is navigating a real relationship, not just dating. He’s absolutely still on a journey. And since most Netflix viewers likely aren’t following him on social media, it still feels valuable to share his story with a wider audience.
