After seeing a few posts here about how much people enjoyed East of Eden I decided to read it and whoa...What an incredible book!!
A couple months ago I saw a couple threads by you guys on how good East of Eden was. It was sitting on my bookshelf for quite some time and the size always intimidated me from reading it. Thanks to your glowing recommendations I decided to give it a go and absolutely loved it!
I was really struck by the different takes on fate.
-
Our fate is predetermined and therefore little we do will influence it
-
Our fate is in our hands and we have the ultimate decision in determining who we are
I just loved how Steinbeck uses this theme throughout the book and the only character is actually fully utilizes it is Cal.
Additionally, I found myself very frustrated with Adam throughout the book. Even though he's painted as the most morally good character in the books I found him to be a poor son, brother, father and friend. He does not wish anyone harm, but he does little to help those around him and his absenteeism as a friend and family member really put me off him as a good person.
Excited to hear what you all think!
