Does a clipping mask need to be a filled path?

I have a compound path that is basically an outline that I would like to use as a clipping mask. I set up the layers (I think) correctly, but I can't make a clipping mask.

I want to use the Compound Path as a clipping mask to provide clear sharp edges for the Group below
