Hospice volunteer question!

Im currently an inspiring nursing school student and do weekly volunteer calls for a hospice and think I may want to work in hospice once I graduate. My question is, what would you want to hear if your loved one you had taken care of passed away? For example I had to call a son today and ask if his dad had everything he needed in terms of supplies and meds for the week, knowing the sons mom had just recently passed :/!!! I TOLD HIM HAVE A GOOD REST OF YOUR WEEK AND TOTALLY FUMBLED TRYING TO GIVE MY CONDOLENCES 🫩🫩🫩🫩🫩 i feel embarrassed and just have such a strong desire to better my therapeutic communication. He sounded hurt and i just wish i could have said something with more meaning that isn’t grossly optimistic or dreadfully pessimistic.
