How common were Asians like Filipinos or Chinese folks in early colonial Mexico, California, Oregon and Washington?
I’ve been digging through some colonial records lately and keep seeing people labeled as ‘Chino/a’, which apparently covered a huge range of Asian identities in New Spain. Now I’m genuinely obsessed with figuring out how widespread this actually was. Like… were these mostly folks connected to the Manila Galleon trade just passing through, or were there legit permanent settlements happening in places like Sinaloa, Sonora, or even early California?
It’s wild to me that this part of history gets buried when the evidence is literally right there in the archives. Anyone else nerding out about this or know where to find more specifics?
