[F4M] An invaluable promise - advance lit+ longterm
Neither of them had asked for this. The arrangement had been made long before either of them had the chance to protest, sealed by expectation and family obligation rather than love or choice. It wasn’t a story of fate or romance, it was duty, dressed up to look like destiny.
He was everything she had always avoided: confident, spoiled, and effortlessly magnetic. The kind of man who never had to work for attention because it followed him everywhere, his smile, his wealth, his reputation. Parties seemed to orbit around him. He was the pulse of every room he entered, loud laughter and champagne glass in hand. To him, their marriage was nothing more than a contract, a necessary formality to appease family alliances, a box to tick before returning to his real life.
She, on the other hand, lived quietly. Her world was smaller, steadier, built around books and simple pleasures. Where he thrived in crowds, she preferred solitude. Where he flaunted, she concealed. She didn’t begrudge him his world; she simply wanted no part in it. And yet, here they were, bound together in name, strangers beneath the same roof.
For months, she endured the silence that stretched between them. He stayed out late, coming home reeking of perfume and nightlife. His laughter sometimes echoed faintly through the halls when he took calls from people she didn’t know. He treated her coldly, and distantly, as if she were a constant inconvenience. To him, she was just the wife on paper, the woman whose presence kept the family name intact.
But things changed when she stopped caring.
At first, it was subtle: she started going out more, accepting invitations, allowing herself to laugh, to wear colors he’d never seen on her before. The quiet woman he’d dismissed began to move with confidence. She stopped waiting for him to notice her absence. And when he saw her smiling at someone else, a genuine smile, effortless and bright, it struck him harder than he expected.
That was then something shifted.
The same man who had once shrugged off their marriage now found himself watching her too closely. He didn’t know why it bothered him, why seeing her talk to another man made his chest tighten. He wasn’t attached to her emotionally, and yet a strange protectiveness began to take root. He found excuses to ask where she was going, who she was meeting, when she would return. It wasn’t love, at least, not yet, but something possessive, raw, and confusing.
For the first time, he began to see her. Not as an obligation, not as a title, but as someone who could leave, someone he might actually lose.
And that terrified him.
Would he be willing to give up the care free lifestyle, the fleeting thrills, the endless cycle of faces and parties, for her? Could the restless man who never believed in love learn what it meant to build something real, something lasting?
Or would his need to keep her close destroy the very thing that could have saved them both?

While I originally imagined this as a modern plot, I am willing to discuss a different time period. Also it does not need to occur with in the USA. We can build this story how ever we’d like!
