Why your next laptop NEEDS an NPU (and what it actually does)"

Honestly… “NEEDS” is a bit of an exaggeration right now.

But yeah, NPUs are actually useful, just not in the way marketing makes it sound.

So what does an NPU even do?
It’s basically a small processor inside your laptop built specifically for AI tasks. Instead of your CPU or GPU handling things like voice recognition or image processing, the NPU takes over. That makes those tasks faster and way more power efficient.

Where you actually notice it:

  • video calls (better background blur, eye contact, noise removal)
  • voice typing and real-time translation
  • AI features in apps like photo editing or summaries

And the big thing… it runs locally. So you don’t always need internet for AI stuff, and it saves battery too.

Now the honest part…

You don’t need an NPU yet unless you’re actually using these features. Most people won’t notice a huge difference today.

But in the next 2–3 years, more apps are going to rely on on-device AI. That’s when NPUs will start to matter a lot more.

So yeah, it’s more about future-proofing than an immediate must-have. If you’re buying a new laptop anyway, it’s a nice bonus. If not, you’re not missing out on anything major right now.
