My horn stopped working 😭

Question

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with the horn on my car and would really appreciate some guidance.

I drive a Ford Focus 2013 station wagon (EcoBoost 1.0, 125 hp, type DYB). The horn stopped working shortly after I bought the car.

Right now I’m in Germany, so I can’t just go back to the dealership where I got it. I’d really like to fix this myself if possible, since I’m worried a mechanic might charge something like €200–300 for what could be a small issue.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

- Checked the fuse in the engine bay (15A blue micro fuse)

- Replaced the fuse with a new one

- Swapped the horn relay with another relay in the fuse box

- Tried different fuse/relay combinations to rule out a faulty one

None of that worked.

What I’ve noticed:

- When I press the horn, there is no clicking sound from the relay at all

- From what I’ve seen online, there should usually be a click

- That makes me think the signal isn’t even reaching the relay

So now I’m wondering if it could be:

- A wiring issue in the steering wheel

- A faulty clock spring

- Or something else before the relay in the circuit

It could also be the horn itself, but it feels strange that there’s zero response from the fuse/relay box.

The reason this matters a lot right now is that I need to get an inspection (DEKRA) to obtain an environmental sticker, and the horn is required to be functional for that.

If anyone has ideas, common faults for this model, or things I can check myself without too much disassembly, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot.

(Wrote this with the help of ChatGPT, I’m very tired… I excuse the robotic tone lol)
