Any stories about how country music helped you through hard times?
I am going through a tough time this morning hating myself and my actions. listening to some of my fav songs is helping me.
In 2023 I had severe PTSD emerge from an old trauma that led me to be actively suicidal. I was living in a city with no family and 1 friend who was more like an acquaintance at the time. Being scared of jumping in front of a bus or train I locked myself in my condo. During those two weeks and the healing months after, my RDF TV subscription where I watched the Marty Stuart show on repeat was so comforting and the only escape I had.
During that time I also watched a doc put out by the Judds that showed the aftermath of Naomi’s passing and it helped me realize that its better to try and live.
Keith Whitley’s version of “I can’t go around mirrors“ was a breaking point at that time in a good way. It let me feel all the emotions I was previously suppressing around my trauma. I’ve yet to hear another song that encapsulates the emotion of hating one’s self so much. It felt like the emotion in his delivery made me feel safe and seen.
Marty Stuart’s Pilgrim album helped me during that time too because it was so immersive.
Some of my only happy childhood/young adult memories are going to country shows with my mom or friends.
Country music has always been an escape and a safe place to feel deep emotions in my life as I never felt safe expressing them irl.
Friends, family and to an extent my partner don’t understand why I love country music history, media and music so much.
Just wondering if there are others out there like me? happy stories about country music are welcome of course too. :)
