Is it safe to use the stove top?

The bottom heating element in the oven caught on fire tonight, with flames, sparking, and zapping noises. Part of it crumbled and fell apart.

Is it safe to use the stovetop, say for cooking eggs?

Or would it be best to buy a hot plate and use that until we get the oven fixed?
