Side-Chain Functions?

How on Earth do I go about figuring this out? I know EC refers to 50% of the maximal reaction, while TC refers to 50% of the cells being either damaged or considered non-viable. How do I figure out what impact the side-chains have? Is there a pattern I should be looking for between data and structure, or is this one of those that I should focus entirely on the numbers for? I hate the FOYE's textbook and Bibliu man.
