Estimated taxes after Roth conversion last year - can I reduce payments if income will be lower?
I’m retired (57) and trying to figure out how to handle estimated taxes this year after doing a Roth conversion last year.
For 2026, the IRS quarterly vouchers have me paying $2,117 per quarter (~$8,468 total), which I assume is based on my 2025 return that included a partial Traditional IRA to Roth conversion.
For 2026 I’m estimating my total tax will be around $6,000 if I don’t do another Roth conversion.
I’m undecided on whether I’ll do another conversion this year, and if I do, it would likely be in December when I'll know where I stand in my tax bracket.
My questions is do I need to keep paying the $2,117/quarter to stay within safe harbor or can I reduce my estimated payments to match my expected ~$6,000 tax?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
