Visa restriction Proclamation 10998 : what are my chances to get a J-1 visa as a recognised refugee from France ?
I am a master student and got accepted for an exchange semester in a prestigious public policy school in LA. Unfortunately , I am afraid my visa will be refused because I am a national from one of the banned countries for non-immigrant visas since January 2026.
However, I am a recognised refugee in France and have no ties to or documents from my home country. I am objectively not a threat for the US national security or immigration concerns In so far as I have an ongoing career in public policy in Europe, my family is here, my studies need to be finished as well and I am a 22 years old female with no dangerous background. I have an excellent experience in research, ONG and policy, and I am committed to do more in Europe after my master.
I will try to get until the interview for the visa, but should I hope for a waiver (exemption) on the basis of hardship or national interest for the US?
I have all the required documents and even multiples letters of recommendation for my university and the Sol Price in L.A. and it is such a valuable opportunity especially for someone that comes from a background like mine..
Do you think all these reasons could make my case stronger and maybe change something? or the ban is automatically a no? Did someone faced something similar or knows a bit more about this? Can you maybe give me some advices tell me if there is a chance or not at all.
