Question regarding the creation of Kachina dolls
Hello! I have lived in the southwest my entire life and have recently fallen in love with the art and history behind the kachina and the dolls created to manifest them. I am very interested in creating some myself and even have potential buyers, but I definitely feel a little bit cold to the prospect of 1. Stealing revenue from Hopi artists 2. Creating a piece of art with cultural and religious history that I do not share. While I do have a portion of Apache blood in my family, I am not a registered member of any reservations or share any blood with the Hopi.
So my question to you all, especially those with Hopi and other Pueblo ancestry, is it taboo to create kachina dolls and sell them if I am not of Hopi descent?
