Speed should I buy
I’ve been shopping around for the last week and keep finding myself going overkill mode with 10G options. please help me decide what speeds to go for.
Usage:
2 people
ISP 100mb/s current max I would realistically do is 500mb/s or 1G if I got a crazy deal.
Desktops, work laptops, IoTs
Proxmox server from old gaming desktop to run various things as a for fun homelab: HA, Gitea, AdGuard Home (or Pi or use router solution), Frigate (depending on Unifi or not)
could entertain a small NAS purely for backups. getting media for plex/jellyfin sounds like a chore
Overkill Options I’ve looked at:
Mikrotik Rb5009 to 10GB spine to access switches ($7-900?)
Unifi UDM Pro + 16 pro max Poe ($760 - more if I was to do aggregation switch)
Realistic thought:
Unifi Cloud Gateway Max (if I go protectli for NVR storage) or ultra (can always get the dedicated NVR later - or maybe still better option regardless) + 2 Lite 16 PoE ($530-600) (Depending on NVR option may replace 1 with dedicated NVR but they are same price)
+APs
Couple hundred dollar fluctuations here or more depending on options.
Should I care about anything over 1GBs? If I wanted 10GB for something I guess I could get a 10GB switch and leave devices in same VLAN.
I will do some VLAN segregations if relevant.
Looking for recommendations and up to any other solutions. I’m techy but not a network engineer by any means. Confident I could get Mikrotik working if that was the better route. No TP-Link is really my only hard stance.
thanks for the help
