Mudroom Stairs

We currently have utility carpet on a staircase that feeds off of our mudroom to both the garage and playroom above. I believe it’s only plywood underneath. Any suggestions besides vinyl and hardwood (only because I’m assuming it’s costly) that is both attractive and durable to replace the carpet with? Thanks!
