N100 vs i5-8265U for a home NAS + Docker (adblock + VPN) — which one should I choose?
Hi everyone,
I’m building my first home server/NAS and I’m not sure which CPU to go for:
- Intel N100 (6 SATA ports and 4 Gigabit ports)
- Intel Core i5-8265U (8 SATA ports and 2 Gigabit ports)
Planned use:
- Docker containers (Pi-hole or AdGuard Home + WireGuard)
- File storage / NAS
- Some extra services I’ll probably use in the future
- It will be running 24/7 in principle
The idea for this server is to keep power consumption low and have it scalable long-term. I’m also considering the i5 because I saw it performs a bit better than the N100 and has more threads, plus it uses DDR4 (RAM is really expensive).
Also, its power consumption can be reduced, but I’m still unsure because everyone talks highly of the N100 and I’ve never really seen much about this i5 in this context.
My main question:
Is the extra power of the i5 worth it for a setup like this, or will the N100 be enough even looking a few years ahead?
im from Europe and both boards cost around €200 each, which is worth noting.
Thanks! 🙏
